Let’s be honest, Momma—getting kids to build good habits isn’t always easy. π
The morning alarm rings, and while you’re pouring your first cup of coffee, your child is still buried under the blankets pretending the world doesn’t exist. Sound familiar? π♀️
Here’s the good news: sometimes, the key to forming habits isn’t nagging or lecturing—it’s inspiring.
The Power of an Idea π±
Charlotte Mason reminds us that habits are first born out of ideas.
We entertain the idea → it sparks the act → the act repeated becomes the habit → and the habit shapes the character.
One of my favorite examples is the story of the Great Duke of Wellington. He chose to sleep in a narrow bed so that if he tried to roll over, he’d have to get up instead. To him, wanting to turn over meant it was time to rise.
Now imagine telling that story to a sleepy child. He may not love the idea of getting up early, but he does want to be brave like the hero of Waterloo. Suddenly, rising promptly feels like part of something bigger—a noble story he gets to live.
Why Stories Work ✨
Children (and let’s be real—grown-ups too!) are moved more by imagination than by instruction.
πΏ A nagging reminder can feel heavy.
πΏ But an inspiring story gives them a vision of who they can become.
That’s why sowing an idea gently and repeatedly can take root. Over time, it shifts from just a thought to a chivalric impulse—a noble choice they want to make.
How to Sow Ideas Gently π‘
Charlotte Mason warns us: if kids sense we’re pushing too hard, they stiffen against it.
So instead of saying, “You must get up early,” we plant stories, examples, and inspiring little seeds:
π A hero who chooses courage.
π️ A saint who models self-control.
✝️ A Scripture that reminds us of God’s strength.
These stories do the nudging for us. And little by little, our children begin to imitate—not because they’re forced, but because they want to.
Final Encouragement πΈ
Momma, the habits you’re shaping in your children aren’t just about chores or morning routines. They’re about sowing ideas that grow into character and, ultimately, a life of faith.
✨ You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to keep planting good seeds—and trust God to bring the harvest in your child’s heart.
